Local Candidate Forum Well Attended

A local candidate forum Friday,April12attheNemont Friendship Room was well attended. About 74 people, including 11 of the twelve invited candidates were there.

A panel of organizers prepared questions and moderators presented the same, specific questions pertaining to each of the candidate’s hopeful office.

For school board trustee candidates, questions like asking opinions on the 4 day school week and would they reverse it if it is not working.

Basic, background and qualifications for the job questions were asked of each candidate. Most other questionswereaboutwhatthe steps candidates plan to take, or how to improve the office, how they would fulfill duties, county budget improvement and more questions pertaining to what the candidate felt was the biggest obstacle facing the office in question.

Sheriff Clint Lowe was called out of the meeting due to an emergency after three of seven questions. At that point, his opponent Duane Anderson stated it probably wasn’t fair to Clint if he continued without the other candidate.

There were about seventy questions asked and answered. We found that most candidates were in agreement with their opposition on most points. The questions were not too meaty, and it seemed a fairly agreeable bunch. However, overall it was a good gathering and voters who took the time to attend, did get some feeling of how the candidates fielded questions and their ability to respond and clearly convey their opinions in public.

Due to time constraints only a very few questions came from the crowd but manystayedforafewminutes after the function to visit.

Someone asked us if we at least got a good quote, we really didn’t. Most of the candidates indicated that they filed because of interest in giving back and participating in the community. Garrett Lund summed things up, pointing out, as a community we need to develop better communications among ourselves and to show up and be heard.

It seemed that by attending the gathering, people who had their minds made up of who they would vote for, likely did not change their minds but the meeting may have swayed those undecided.

At the table of inquisition were candidates Micheline Lekvold (for school board), Cody Warren (for Clerk of Court), Garrett Lund (for school board), Duane Anderson (for sheriff), Dottie Berg (for Clerk of Court), Clint Lowe (incumbent for sheriff), TammiFladager(forcommissioner in district 3), Logan Olson (incumbent for school board), Ben Fosland (for District Court Judge), Troy Larson (for commissioner in district 3), and Gayle May (for school board). Upper, far right are the moderators, Floyd McMillan and Joan Bjarko, who did well keeping things on track.

Felix Gilbertson put the event together and deserves recognition for getting the community involved. -bb

FLAXVILLE LUTHERAN CHURCH is getting ….

FLAXVILLE LUTHERAN CHURCH is getting ready for their 100th anniversary next year and are trying to get several projects wrapped up in time for the celebration.

Four students in the SHS Industrial Arts Woods Class built new stairs and connected them to the building last week. Mark Chabot the new IA instructor oversaw the project. They picked up the materials, measured, cut and built the stairs. Once put together, they put a paint grit on the steps, so no one will slip on the stairs and gave the wood a few coats of paint. While installing the stairs they went into the building and drilled a few holes in cement to reattach a railing that had been loose for some time. The contractors for the project were Evan Tande, Clay Southland, Brecken Maher and Tristan Lekvold. Well done to these young men and Mr.

Commissioners Purchase Solid Waste Equipment; Award Bridge Contract; Hire New Librarian

At the regular Monday meeting of Daniels County Commissioners, bids were accepted and approved to purchase a 2019 Freightliner for hauling solid waste from Daniels County to neighboring Plentywood landfill as our landfill is reaching maximum capacity for household garbage.

The truck is a specialty unit with a long chassis and a hook to load long containers of refuse for hauling. The purchase was $139,900, Three new containers have also been approved for purchase. The containers will sit at new station, soon to be built at the solid waste site near the landfill. The containers in a sense become a large trailer when loaded on the aforementioned truck. They have hydraulic lids to be used, especially when transporting. The three containers total was $54,400. Two will be shipped to Scobey in that cost, the other will be picked up in Fargo where the new/ used truck is located and hauled back to Scobey by the solid waste crew.

The first stage of bid awards for the new Coal Creek Bridge north of Peerless was accepted.

The superstructure (main deck of the bridge) bid came in at $210,500 and was awarded to Contech Engineered Solutions, LLC in Ohio. The bridge construction will involve several bids for different aspects of the project, such as the superstructure above. Other bids will include site prep, road build up and the underlying structure to put the main bridge deck onto, such as pilings and installation.

Hopes are to have those bids coming in soon and a possible start date in coming weeks.

Among other business covered included hiring a new librarian. Arlene Kegley, who has served as Deputy Clerk of Court, will be leaving that post and start at the county library in May. Val Landeraaen has served as librarian for many years She and her husband Paul, the Scobey Lutheran Pastor, are retiring and moving to Oregon soon.
