NARCAN – A Medication That Reverses The Effects of Opioids – Available At Daniels County Health Department
What is Narcan (generic name is Naloxone)? It is a life-saving medication that can reverse an overdose from opioids, including heroin, fentanyl, and prescription opioid medications. Daniels County Health Department (DCHD) receives Narcan through the Narcan Distribution Program at Montana Department of Health and Human Services.
How does Narcan work and how do you use it? It quickly reverses an overdose by blocking the effects of opioids. It can restore normal breathing within 2 to 3 minutes in a person whose breathing has slowed or even stopped as a result of opioid overdose. More than one dose of Narcan may be required when stronger opioids like fentanyl are involved.
