It was a long day but a short game when the Scobey High School varsity football team opened its 2024 season in Montana's southeast sector Friday, August 30.

The Spartans traveled nearly 600 miles roundtrip when visiting the Powder River County Hawks in Broadus, returning home early Saturday morning with a 48-8 victory.

The team bus departed from behind the Scobey High School at 11 a.m. and when the roundtrip was completed, also behind the school, it was 1:31 a.m. Saturday morning.

The Spartans won't be traveling for the next two games as they host the Circle Wildcats Friday, September 6, in their annual Homecoming game, and the Plentywood Wildcats Friday, September 13. Both contests kick off at 7 p.m. on Plainsmen Field (Radio: KCGM 95.7 FM. TV: Nemont.TV).

Scheduled for 6 p.m., the opening kickoff was in the air at 6:03 p.m. and the Spartans began their opening offensive possession of the new season at their own 22-yard line.

Quarterback Brecken Maher, a junior, handed off the ball to sophomore runningback Torsten Lamb on the first offensive play of the contest, trucking for a dozen yards and a fresh four downs right off the hop. Seven plays later Maher passed to sophomore Kolten Machart, who reached the end zone on a 21-yard play. Lamb added the 2-point conversion and almost 4 minutes into the contest the Spartans were ahead for good at 8-zip.

On their first possession the Hawks faced a 4thand-8 from their own 22yard line, went for it and secured the first down with an 8-yard rush. Junior Cooper Axtman's tackle gave the Broadus boys a gain of zero yards on first down and junior Konner Oller fell on a fumble the next play, giving Scobey a short-field posses sion at the 28.
