Two Young Spartan Runners Help Their Team Place Fifth

Two Young Spartan Runners Help Their Team Place Fifth
SCOBEY’S FUTURE 1-2 PUNCH! Who would have thunk it the future of the Scobey High School cross country program would have been decided by a freshman and an eighth grader during last week’s 61st annual All-Class State Meet in Missoula. Well, it was! Eighth grader Brooklyn Hughes, (left) and freshman Hazel Sones placed 21st and 29th respectively in a field of 84 to majorly help the Spartans finish in fifth place out of 13 teams, which was a mere four points out of capturing the third-place trophy. Great job girls! To the right of these two current Scobey cross country superstars are senior Mya Green, who placed seventh in the girls race, and Scobey junior Tristan Lekvold, who was Scobey’s top male finisher in 23rd place in a field of 128. — Photos for the Leader by Danielle Fladager

It was a huge running performance by a couple of State C rookies.

It was so big the Scobey High School girls’ cross country program is in all likelihood set for some major successes in, at the very least, the next half-decade.

The event was the 61st annual Montana High School Association’s All-Class State Meet in Missoula Saturday, October 26, held on the University of Montana Golf Course.

Senior Mya Green was expected to be near the top and she was, placing seventh in a time of 21:41.9, just slightly two minutes back of Whitewater’s Shelbi LaBrie, who successfully defended her 2023 state title.

What was not expected is who crossed the finish line next for the Spartans. Eighth grader Brooklyn Hughes was called into varsity duty when Shelby Cole suffered an injury and was declared earlier in the week unable to compete. All Hughes did was cover the Missoula course in 23:35.0, a tremendous performance earning 21st place in a field of 84 runners.

It gets even better.
