The zero at the end of the Scobey boys’ basketball record is still in play.

The Spartans found a way to win on the road when traveling to Lustre Christian High School Saturday, Janaury 18, recording a very tight 40-37 District 3C victory. The win gives the boys in blue and gold a 2-game lead over the Lions in the conference standings but ahead of the Circle Wildcats, who visit Scobey this weekend (Sat., Jan., 25), by just one game.

The very fast-paced contest saw the only two lead changes of the game occurring in the first quarter.

Johnslee Pierre of the Lions was responsible for the first one at the 4:19 mark when sinking a field goal close to the rim for a 5-4 lead. At the 2:54 mark Reese Tande’s basket gave the Spartans the lead for the rest of the game. Kolten Machart sank a field goal Tande a trey making it 12-7 Scobey through one quarter.

The Spartans created the initial largest lead of the contest at 14-7 when Brecken Maher scored.

Lustre Christian fought its way back, however, going on an 11-4 scoring run to tie it at 18, with Byron Ewing, Prestyn Klatt and Cam Reddig providing the points.

By halftime it was back to square one for both squads as it was tied at 20.

As the third quarter began, Cooper Axtman tallied on a pick-and-roll with Maher and Machart, off a long-bomb pass, scored for a 24-20 advantage. Pierre’s pair of free throws brought it back within two points but Scobey would soon create the second largest lead of the match. Machart sank a 5-foot floater with 4:55 left until halftime while Axtman drilled a 3-pointer as the 35-second shot clock was two seconds away from making its presence known, giving the visitors a 2922 lead.
