Many people, mostly Scobey fans, can’t wait to see what the local Lady Spartans are going to do for an encore performance at the 2025 East C Divisional Basketball Tournament, which began Wednesday, March 5, at Sidney High School.

Same with the Froid-Lake Redhawks, one of the hottest squads in these parts despite having the worst overall record of the eight teams. It would be extremely remiss not to mention the Bainville Bulldogs, who have yet to experience the agony of defeat this season, or the North Country Mavericks, who, after all, are the two-time defending Class C state champion. Their 73game winning might have come to an end Saturday the 22nd in the Wolves’ Den Gym but that certainly doesn’t mean they became a bad team in the span of 11 days. Not even close!

Throw in the other four qualifiers in the Circle Wildcats, Frazer Bearcubs, Richey-Lambert Fusion and Savage Warriors—they didn’t get this far by being bad b-ball players!

Two will advance to the State C Tournament at the Butte Civic Center March 12-15, in which the State C Boys will be held in conjunction with the girls event.

The Wednesday, March 5, first-round pairings of the East C Divisional Girls’ Tournament in Sidney look like this: 3 p.m. — District 2C fourth-place Savage Warriors (12-9, 840-796, 40.037.9) versus District 3C first-place Scobey Spartans (15-6, 1050-622, 50.0-29.6).

4:30 p.m. — District 2C second-place Froid-Lake Redhawks (7-14, 928-927, 44.1-44.1) versus District 3C third-place Circle Wildcats (17-5, 1295-586, 58.826.6).

6 p.m. — District 3C fourth-place Frazer Bearcubs (10-11, 10951220, 52.1-58.0) versus District 2C first-place Bainville Bulldogs (21-0, 1059-630, 50.4-30.0).

7:30 p.m. — District 2C third-place Richey-Lambert Fusion (14-8, 1103-939, 50.1-42.6) versus District 3C second-place North Country Mavericks (19-1, 1090-505, 54.5-25.5).

By now some might be thinking how can Froid-Lake be considered one of the hottest teams in this tourney with a 7-14 overall record?

It is real simple: they are playing their best basketball right now when it counts the most!

Yes, the Redhawks of Head Coach Josh Stentoft (SHS ‘96) bring the worst overall record into the East C event at 7-14 overall (.333). When the regular season concluded Saturday, February 15, their conference mark stood at 4-10 (.285). How could anybody think this team was any good with a record like that. It is real easy as they became hot just at the right time.

On opening weekend (Dec. 13-14) Froid-Lake lost 52-32 to Custer-Hysham then defeated Broadview- Lavina 42-30. Following was a 3-game losing streak to Plentywood at home by 13 points, Mon-Dak by 7 in Westby and by 20 at Class B Popla...
