The Scobey Spartans are headed back to the State C Tournament and they are not there to be spectators but instead competitors.

Their venture down to Butte America this week to be part of the final eight teams in Class C hoops is the program’s first since the 2021 season, when the Spartans won the championship over Twin Bridges by a very wide margin at Lockwood High School in Billings.

Scobey draws the Seeley- Swan Blackhawks, the second-place team out of the West Division, in the second game of the tourney at 1:30 p.m. today (Thursday, March 13).

Facing fellow District 3Cer Lustre Christian in last Saturday’s championship contest at the East C Divisional Tournament in Sidney, the Spartans raced to a quick 7-0 lead in the initial 1:15 of the game. Bram Handran began the scoring down low 24 seconds in, Cooper Axtman’s 3-point shot hit the rim and fell through the net and Handran struck again with a 7-foot bank.

The Lions’ Johnslee Pierre canned a pair of free throws at the 5:03 mark, Prestyn Klatt followed with two free throws and not long after Lustre Christian was within 9-7 and then 11-9.

With just under 6 minutes remaining until halftime the Lions were still hanging around, trailing by just 19-17.
