COOP, CARNS AND RT — Scobey’s Cooper Axtman (left) and Reese Tande (right) arejacked up during Friday’s semifinal game against the Box Elder Bears at the State CTournament in Butte. Perhaps John Carney (middle) mentioned “tomorrow I’m goingto score my 1,000th point in high school hoops,” which he did Saturday versus FortBenton, and the two absolutely loved the thought. — Leader Photo by Jerrick Olson

was knotted at 16 through one quarter and the Spartans led 32-29 at halftime before outscoring the Lions 38-23 in the second half for a 7052 win. Scobey was 24-41 (.585) from the field while the Lions were 19-45 (.422). In the consolation contest later in the day Scobey faced the Fort Benton Longhorns and raced to a 24-9 lead through the first quarter and were never really in much danger as it had its way in a 59-35 triumph to earn the third-place trophy. The Spartans were 22-58 (.389) from the field while the River City boys made 13-40 (.325).

Later that night Box Elder slipped past Manhattan Christian 65-60 in the championship game, which was a rematch of the 2024 title tilt. The Bears are now the 2-time defending Class C state champ and have an active 52-game winning streak going into next season, which begs the question: will they tie or surpass Scobey’s All-Class record of 57 straight wins? Stay tuned in for the answer.
