FOOTBALL — Great player on the field, an even greater person off the field: George Reed, the American professional football player who opted to play in the Canadian Football League instead of the National Football League in 1963 because the CFL was paying more money, died Sunday, October 1, 2023, in Regina, one day before his 84th birthday. Reed (60, 205) played with the Saskatchewan Roughriders from 1963-75 and retired just before the 1976 training camp as the CFL’s all-time leader in rushing yards (16,116) and rushing touchdowns (134). He was later surpassed by Mike Pringle who gained 16,425 yards in the CFL rushing department with the Edmonton Eskimos, Sacramento Gold Miners, Baltimore Stallions and Montreal Alouettes while Reed remains second overall in that category (note: Pringle also rushed for thre NFL’s Atlanta Falcons and Denver Broncos plus theSacramentoSurgeoftheWorldLeagueofAmerican Football).
