They Didn’t Make State But Were Handed Trophy After Final Game
Its plan of qualifying for the State C Tournament in Great Falls didn’t come to fruition but the 2023-24 Scobey varsity boys’ basketball team came as close as it could to doing so, placing third at the East C Divisional Tournament in Glasgow.
With only two seniors, Tyler Leischner and Braxton Wolfe, graduating from Scobey High School this May, the local boys’ hoop scene appears to be shining brighter than a hot-summer sun. Toss in the fact this past season’s team, for the most part, started one senior, three sophomores and one freshman through nearly the entire final four-fifths of the season.

Scobey’s 2023-24 season (21-3, 1514-849, 63.035.3) realized a 17-0 start, including wins at the Coach Connors Classic (Dan Connors, inducted into Montana Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1984), with victories over Harlowton-Ryegate and Garfield County (Jordan).
The following weekend were large-margin wins over Froid-Lake and Powder River County (Broadus) at the Scobey Tip-Off Tournament.
Then the competition shifted mostly into District 3 conference action, the exception being Class B Wolf Point, where wins, in order played, occurred over: Dodson (away); Circle (home); Wolf Point (A); Frazer (H); North Country (Saco, Whitewater, Hinsdale) in Saco; Lustre Christian (H); Dodson (H); Circle (A); Wolf Point (H); Nashua (A); Frazer (A); North Country (H); Nashua (H).
The 17-game win streak to open the season had the Spartans outscoring their opponents 1149-543, or a 67.5-to-31.9 average.
The 53-43 victory over Lustre Christian, which was the top-ranked Class C boys’ team in the state at the time, according to the Montana Television Network poll, was a big one as it thrust the Spartans into the number one spot in the poll.
As it is always said, what goes around comes around and on Saturday, February 10, when Scobey traveled southwest to Lustre Christian High School for its final game of the regular season, it came around. The Lions were 49-39 winners but due to ...
