The Scobey Spartans, on their home Plainsmen Field turf for the first time this season, had one final chance Friday night to get the ball back in their hands, try to create a tie and go into a Montana Playoff, which is another way of saying over- time.

Here’s the on-side kick with 1:36 left and... Circle junior Conner Guldborg fell on it at the midfield line.

The Wildcats ran the remaining 96 seconds off the clock with three straight rushes and at 9:12 p.m. it was a 20-12 final in favor of the visitors.

It was a tight one all the way, even when the visitors took a 14-point lead with six minutes remaining in the third quarter.

The victory keeps Circle atop the East C Division standings while the Spartans drop to 1-1.

Scobey took the initial lead on the first possession of the contest.

After runningback Torsten Lamb (6 yards) and quarterback Brecken Maher (3) made it third-and-1 at their own 24-yard line, Lamb earned the first down by bulling for 5 yards and a fresh 4 downs. On the next play Maher executed a keeper and was gone for a 51-yard touchdown with the contest just 1 minute and 38 seconds old. The 2-point conversion rush failed leaving the score at 6-0.

Circle, on its initial offensive possession, countered with a 13-play drive chewing up 7:02 of game clock and ending at the Scobey 36.

However, two possessions later and now in the second quarter, the Wildcats found the end zone when sophomore quarterback Owen Beery passed to senior Breckyn White for a 7-yard pass in the southwest corner of the westside end zone. He grabbed the pass with no room to spare but somehow stayed inbounds.

Just like the Spartans on their initial tally, Circle could not convert the 2-point conversion, leaving the score knotted at 6-all.
