The Scobey Spartans took a step outside of their comfort zone and by the end of the season, which is just one month away in Missoula, it could pay big dividends.

Friday, September 20, the Scobey teams took a 500-mile roundtrip to Dickinson, North Dakota for the Becki Wells Invitational, which was conducted on the Heart River Golf Course.

It was a huge meet numbers-wise as 492 total prep athletes competed (217 girls: 57 high school; 41 JV; 68 7-8 grade; 51 6th grade. 275 boys: 117 high school, 46 JV, 89 7-8; 23 6th).

It was an important meet in the sense the Scobey girls and boys competed mostly against people they have never competed against, so they weren’t used to the usual suspects they run against most every weekend.

The varsity girls race, a 5,000-meter run (3.1 miles) featuring some hills but nothing too steep, was particularly interesting. Nearly half of the competitors who finished in the top 20 spots were in grades 7-9, including six frosh, one eighth grader and two seventh graders. It was one of the freshman, Harley Jeannotte of Willston High School, who won the race in 19:19.14, Her time was just over one minute and 52 seconds faster than the runnersup, her sophomore teammate Cambree Moss.

Scobey’s leading runner, senior Mya Green, placed 14th in 21:23.77. Teammates senior Taizah Hersel (43rd), freshman Hazel Sones (49th), senior Kazee Trower (50th) and senior Grace Williams (54th) followed.
