Let’s just say the Scobey junior high football team of coaches Mike McDermott and J.R. Maldonado set the tone for what was to become.

All the younger Spartans, who are currently riding a very long winning streak dating back a few seasons, did was squeak by the Forsyth Dogies 90-6 at the beautiful Riverside Park Field along the Yellowstone River.

Leader readers read that right: 90-6! The varsity Spartans came up short point-wise of their younger-program team members but still managed to come away with a dominating 52-6 victory.

The win puts Scobey (4-1, 196-54, 39.2-10.8) in a two-way tie for third place in the East C Division standings with the Culbertson Cowboys (4-1, 238-112, 47.6-22.4). The timing could not be anymore perfect because the two square off Friday, October 4, on Scobey’s Plainsmen Field in a 7 p.m. kickoff (Radio: KCGM 95.7 FM). The winner will move into a two-way tie for second place with the loser of the Fairview at Circle contest, which will also kickoff at 7 p.m.

The Spartans put themselves into this position with their very convincing victory in the Rosebud County

seat.

On their second possession they used a 36-yard pass from junior quarterback Brecken Maher to wide-open senior end Ryan Halverson down the middle of the field for a 36-yard gain. On the next play Torsten Lamb took a hand-off from Maher and bolted 29 yards down to the 3-yard line and then tallied on the next play for a 6-0 lead.

Two possessions later Maher returned a punt 35 yards for a touchdown, Lamb added the 2-point conversion on a rush and the Spartans were starting to get in a comfortable groove.

On the ensuing kickoff the Dogies fumbled and Cooper Axtman recovered but it led to a turnover on downs at the Forsyth 35. After Scobey forced a punt and tallied on its next three possessions for a 30-6 halftime advantage.
