Tipping offthenortheastMontanahoop-campseasonisCoach D’s Hi-Line Hoop Camp & Skills Camp. It is conducted by National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national championship-winning coach Bill Dreikosen, a former Montana High School Association East C Division athlete with the Hinsdale Raiders. He is the long-time head coach of the Rocky Mountain College Battlin’ Bears men’s basketball program of Billings, Montana. Thursday and Friday June 6-7 are the dates for his camp to be held in the Plentywood High School gymnasium. He is scheduled to conduct two camps, which each running those two days. The first is the Hoop Camp for those in grades 1-5 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. A free basketball and t-shirt are included in the overall cost and walk-ins are welcome to attend. The afternoon camp in the same gym runs from 1-4 p.m. on June 6-7 and the older campers need to bring their own ball. They, like the younger kids earlier in the day, will also receive a t-shirt. The second camp is the Gracee Lekvold & Kortney Nelson 2024 Basketball Camp, scheduled to be conducted on Wednesday and Thursday, June 26-27, in the Scobey School gym. Girls and boys in grades K-3 go camping from 8:30-10 a.m., girls and boys in grades 4-6 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and girls only in grades 7-12 from 1-4 p.m. Nelson (SHS ‘20) was a guard for the NCAA Division 2 Montana State University-Billings Yellowjackets. She was named the Great Northwest Conference Defender of the Year, to the All-Conference Team and was one victory away from qualifying for this past season’s national tournament. Lekvold is a guard with Rocky Mountain College in Billings and was named to the Frontier Conference All-Defensive Team and the All-Conference Team following the2023-24season.Thiscampincludesat-shirt and many chances to win prizes. The final camp is the Caden Handran Basketball Camp set for August 1-3, a Thursday, Friday, Saturday run in the Scobey School large gym. Camp instructors include Caden Handran (SHS ‘21), Great Falls High graduate Drew Wyman and Samaje Morgan, three members of the NAIA College of Idaho ‘Yotes men’s basketball program. The trio have played in the last three NAIA Men’s Basketball National Championship Tournament in Kansas City, Missouri, capturing the national championship in 2023 and placing third in 2024. Cole Roberts, who plays for the College of Idaho ‘Yotes baseball program but also knows the game of basketball very well, will also be teaching at the camp plus taking care of all the behind the scenes work that needs to be done. The rest of the story: In the April 4, 2024 issue of the DCL was an article about 2023 Opheim High School graduate Carrie Taylor, who played her prep basketball with the Scobey Spartans. Her University of Providence Argonauts of Great Falls, Montana lost 57-53 to the Dordt Defenders of Iowa in the NAIA Women’s Basketball National Championship Game. What wasn’t told in the article was a woman from Montana was on the Dordt team. She is Eliana Kuperus, a Manhattan Christian grad who scored six points and grabbed four rebounds in the national title game. She is the only active player on the Dordt roster not from Iowa or South Dakota. Her sister and brother also took attended Dordt. In her senior season of basketball at Manhattan Christian she averged 13.4 points and 8.2 rebounds per game and was a Montana High School Association All-State selection. Congratulations on her national championship title! Congrats to Taylor as well for being in uniform and on the bench of a national championship game. The extremely vast majority of Montana athletes cannot say that, but Carrie Taylor, plus some others, sure can! HOCKEY — Will Warriors win it: The Moose Jaw Warriors are in the Western Hockey League finals against the Portland Winterhawks and returned home with a 2-0 lead in the 7-game series.
